Nobody is spared from it: dental biofilm, a soft dental plaque that forms in the mouth. If this bacterial coating, also known as plaque, is only removed irregularly and inadequately, caries, gingivitis, periodontitis or periimplantitis can develop. In order to keep the disease-causing oral biofilm and the resulting tartar under control and thus ensure the long-term health of teeth, gums and periodontal ligament, professional teeth cleaning is of great importance in addition to thorough oral hygiene at home, consisting of twice-daily tooth and interdental care. At Dr. Lehmann in our dental practice in Zurich, we recommend that every patient have a professional teeth cleaning at least twice a year.
In our practice on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse, we offer you “Guided Biofilm Therapy” (GBT), a modern and effective method for removing dental biofilm and tartar.
Guided Biofilm Therapy: Holistic tooth cleaning with the latest technology
Dr. med. dent. Barbara Lehmann in Zurich relies on Guided Biofilm Therapy, a holistic treatment that combines the latest scientific findings and state-of-the-art instruments. Compared to conventional tooth cleaning, Guided Biofilm Therapy offers numerous advantages: This innovative method is not only faster and reduces the workload for our dental hygienists, but is also minimally invasive and gentle on tooth structure and gums.
Instead of rubber cups, brushes or abrasive polishing pastes, which are used in traditional tooth cleaning and can damage tooth surfaces and soft tissue, at GBT we use innovative instruments such as the AIRFLOW® device. This device removes not only biofilm but also superficial discoloration from teeth, restorations and implants. We use the PERIOFLOW® device to clean subgingival biofilm in periodontal and peri-implant pockets, while the scaler removes stubborn tartar quickly and painlessly. These devices work with the specially developed powder, the smaller particle size of which enables gentle cleaning of teeth and gums.
The 8-step protocol of Guided Biofilm Therapy
Our Guided Biofilm Therapy follows a precise 8-step protocol that effectively, safely and gently removes biofilm and tartar, whether on baby teeth, permanent teeth, implants, dentures or orthodontic appliances:
Oral health assessment: Dr. Barbara Lehmann, or the dental hygienist, assesses the patient’s oral health.
Biofilm visualization: The biofilm is colored and made visible.
Patient education: The patient is informed about problem areas and receives tips on how to optimize oral hygiene at home.
Sub- and supragingival cleaning: removal of biofilm with AIRFLOW®.
Tartar removal: If necessary, remaining tartar is removed with the scaler.
Quality control: Checking whether biofilm and tartar have been completely removed.
Caries control and fluoridation: Examination for caries and fluoridation of the teeth.
Recall appointment: Arranging the next appointment for professional teeth cleaning.

This protocol can be customized to the patient and the specific treatment situation to ensure optimal oral health.
