What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is the inflammatory, destructive (tissue-degrading) disease of the tissues that hold the tooth in the jawbone (gums).

How common is periodontitis?

About four out of ten people suffer from periodontitis at some point in their lives. In adults, it is estimated that 70% of tooth loss is due to this disease.

Am I at increased risk for periodontitis?

The resistance to harmful bacteria can be temporarily or permanently reduced. Important factors that make the periodontium more sensitive to potentially harmful bacteria are smoking, diabetes, stress and other general illnesses.
